Allepey
This pleasant market town is built on canals and surrounded by coconut trees. It’s a walking town, with some good old trading houses along the canals, and lovely, shaded paths along which you can stroll through leisurely village life. And, of course, this is the major centre from which to explore the backwaters.
And, the best way to do that would be to stay on the famous houseboats
of Kerala for which Allepey is the main embarkation point. There’s also
plentiful supply of great guesthouses here, which means that you can settle in and enjoy, rather than get yourself into an arrive-houseboat-depart frenzy.
The bus stand and boat jetty are close to each other; the hotels are spread far and wide. The train station is 4 km southwest of the town centre. The beach is about 2km from the city centre; it’s a nice, shaded walk, but there’s no shelter at the beach itself and swimming
can be tricky.
