Ahmedabad

Char MinarAhmedabad (also known as Amdavad) is Gujarat’s major city having a startling amount of charm – a friendly, cosmopolitan, pulsing, dynamic, industrial metropolis, with a tangled, hectic old city, some beautiful mosques, stunning museums, glittering night markets and Sabarmati Ashram (formerly Gandhi’s headquarters).

Over the centuries Ahmedabad (‘abad’ means ‘prosper’) has boomed and declined. Founded in 1411 by Ahmed Shah, at the spot where he saw a hare chasing a dog (he was impressed by its bravery), Ahmedabad was thought to be one of the finest cities in India in the 17th century, but by the 18th century its influence had waned. Its industrial strength once again raised the city to prominence, becoming a huge textile centre from the second half of the 19th century, which resulted in much immigration to man the mills. From 1915 it became famous as the site of Gandhi’s ashram.

The city straddles the Sabarmati River. On the eastern bank Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Road and Relief Road run east to the train station, about 3km away. The old city spreads north and south of Relief Road. The busy road flanking the western bank of the Sabarmati is known as Ashram Road and leads to Sabarmati Ashram. The airport is to the northeast. Most of the old city walls are now demolished, although some gates remain.
